Patty’s background is an indication that we are in an era where women are changing the world in all sectors. With her involvement in transforming lives and her generosity, reminds us to contribute towards a better society.

Larkin & Lacey: Frontera Fund Safeguarding Civil Liberties!

There’s a vast array of civil right groups in the United States that bring awareness to and fights discrimination. They defend human, migrant and civil liberty for all citizens in our nation. One example can be found in those who advocate and safeguard the rights of Native Americans in America. The American Indian Movement is one of the most widely recognized, but there are many more that nobly work to secure freedom from oppression for native nations.

Women of All Red Nations, National Indian Education Association, White Earth Land Recovery Project, National Council on Indian Opportunity, Native American Rights Fund, Society of American Indians, National Congress of American Indians and the Mohawk Warrior Society all exist to promote native well-being and legality.

One group that sets themselves apart from the rest is the Native American Rights Fund. The NARF was historically established in the 1960’s by the Office of Economic Opportunity, but is still very much involved in many aspects of native causes today. Read more: Jim Larkin | Crunchbase

NARF works very hard to guard the legal liberty for impoverished American Indians who could not afford to pay for assistance. Their mission has been aimed at preserving tribal existence, defending Native American resources, fight for Native people’s civil liberties and hold administrations accountable that tread on their freedoms.

The proper and generous funding of civil rights organizations is imperative to their success and outreach. Michel Lacey and Jim Larkin established the Frontera Fund for the purpose of financing Hispanic immigrant civil liberties groups in Phoenix, Arizona.

The Frontera Fund was spawned from a court settlement that the two journalists were afforded after they were falsely arrested by Sheriff Joe Arpaio. Lacey and Larkin, before the arrest, owned and contributed to the alternative publication Phoenix New Times and Village Voice Media. They reported information on some of sheriff Arpaio’s alleged financial and mismanaged indiscretions within the police department.

Larkin and Lacey were released 24 hours later and all of the charges facing the duo were dropped. They sued for abuse of power and for having their first amendment rights violated. The court concluded that Larkin and Lacey were apprehended without probable cause and were allocated 3.75 million dollars as a settlement to the wrong doing of the sheriff’s department. Village Voice Media Holdings has earned a good name for itself through Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin’s dedication to innovative investigative journalism. Their publications informed the community of what was happening and exposed corruption where it was discovered.

Through the Frontera Fund many organizations that support civil rights in Arizona have been able to make a difference in the lives of victims who experienced discrimination and violation to their first amendment rights.

Larkin and Lacey have generously donated to many non-profit civil advocacy groups. Some of these include the American Immigration Council,The Florence Immigrant and Refugee Rights Project,Justice for Immigrants & Families Project, Arizona Dream Act Coalition, Phoenix allies for Community Health, Owl and Panther Hopi foundation and the Kino Border Initiative.
